Membership at Dalton First UMC

Our Connection Pathway is also how we welcome new members. When you’re ready, talk with a pastor or a member of our team and we’ll help you take your next step toward membership.
  • Start anywhere: New → Connect → Discover → Engage (or jump in at the step that fits you right now).
  • Conversation with a pastor: We’ll walk through beliefs, baptism/confirmation (if needed), and what membership means here.
  • Next public step: Be welcomed in a worship service and get connected to a team or group.

Baptism

Baptism is one of two sacraments we celebrate in the United Methodist Church. It’s a sign of God’s grace, a public declaration of faith, and an initiation into the family of Christ. In baptism, we remember that God’s love goes before us, surrounds us, and calls us to live as disciples of Jesus.
In the UMC, baptism is offered for people of all ages—infants, children, youth, and adults—and is done once. If you were baptized in another Christian tradition, we recognize that baptism and do not require you to be baptized again.

The Three Methods of Baptism
We celebrate baptism in one of three ways, each symbolizing the cleansing and new life found in Christ:
  1. Immersion – The individual is fully immersed in water, representing death to sin and rising into new life.
  2. Pouring – Water is poured over the head, signifying the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
  3. Sprinkling – Water is lightly sprinkled on the head, symbolizing God’s cleansing grace.
The method may be chosen based on personal preference, physical needs, or the setting of the service. All three are equally valid and meaningful expressions of baptism.
Next Steps
If you are interested in learning more about baptism—whether for yourself, your child, or a loved one—we’d love to connect with you.
